I have a Butia x Jubaea F2 that looks exactly like a Butia and growth speed is very similar to Butia. From what I understand about F2 hybrids, this result is not surprising. Kind of like a cross between foxtail fiber and the very smooth Vechis fiber.
I came across the legendary Foxy lady palm.
- By the looks of it, drying and wilting, what’re the odds of a rebound if I get it in the ground with profuse water?
- In all the years i have observed it, fronds on the variegated spec.
- Few variegated fronds …..
- Maybe something I might try to track as time goes on.
- Time will tell with my original plant…
- Are they famous because they are the first to produce viable seed?

Lots of people have been sold green ‘foxy lady’ palms in the past, that eventually turn out growing up into standard foxtails. When you germinated the seeds of the foxy lady and the foxtail did you plant them at the same time? My big green one enjoys full sun however and is the fastest growing palm in my landscape and I have hundreds of palms in the ground. These foxy lady palms are thirsty and it’s nearly impossible to overwater them.
- The only mature ( and flowering /seeding ) specimens i’m currently familiar with are those in Kopsick’s collection.
- Full greens do not have any variegation.
- Both are superbly grown, just needs to planted to adapt to So Cal conditions and watering.
- Only the variegated FL produced viable seed so far, but none of the seedlings are variegated.
- I can come pick up that palm at your convenience, deliver you $200 cash, plus the 3 Pseudophoenix seedlings in the pic if you would be interested in selling.
- There are more palms than Foxy Lady.
- Here is the palm, looks very healthy aside from the obvious cold spots on the old fronds.

I planted a 1 gallon Cyphophoenix elgans to the east of it about 3-4 years ago, so its just starting to gain some momentum. Sorry to hear this…..time to edit and replace. The Caryota had to be edited after it flowered; this is the nature of a garden that some plant won’t outlive us. Obviously the dark spots on the trunk remain as photographed above . Two years later and the palm is still standing but also continuing to show the consistent tilt.
I have got palms from Flouibunda and jungle music and never had the problem I had with this palm of you are going to ship palms at least learn how to pack them!!! I never said the palm looked bad I said it was basically bare root and variegated which I specifically said I didn’t want!!! He is the only one to have a problem with their foxy lady order, and started to complain even before it was delivered. 1 of each 3 and 7 is slightly variegated with 2 of each being greens. Good quality plant and amazing growth.
Foxy Lady in Trouble!
Here is the 5th seed that failed float test. I picked up a few seed that was on the ground while taking pics. I have 2 that look just like a foxtail. I know of 1 other grower in Cape Coral that gets viable seed.
Foxy lady palm searching.
Already have an account? Hot and dry in summer, humid and sticky monsoon season, perfect weather Christmas time One is variegated and the other is not?? Are they famous because they are the first to produce viable seed? Being in tropical Cairns, they were probably seedlings 3 yrs ago.
I did notice the dark spot on the side away from the walkway a while back, but it wasn’t really oozing anything at the time. Yeah I had one sprout a while back but had some irrigation issues to my potted plants in my absence and it ended up drying out and dying. Never noticed seed on the variegated Foxy located in another part of the collection. Floribunda had some f2 foxy ladies a while ago. The one I’m growing in Leucadia is from the same source and purchased about the same time, as this and another “Foxy Lady” I have.

Anytime now the frond on the left, which is against the lean will fall off, and you can see the angle of the newest frond which should be on that side of the palm is leaning to the right. I at least have 2 other Foxy Ladies planted about the same time. I have two good size foxy ladies that are perhaps my favorites.
There is a variegated one on ebay right now ends in 21 hours Yup, and that’s why 100% green go foxy gold for more $$ Regular ‘ol green specimens always look flawless.
Unfortunately for you, you’ve got that nasty brown spotting along with the crown lean which makes it look like this one is on the decline. You can see how the trunk is starting to sort of concave a little on the side with the brown spotting. I guess I better start thinking about what I want to plant in it’s place eventually. Yet another sign of demise after the last frond dropped is a horizontal crack in the most external crownshaft sheath. Værdiborg
